Okay, so you might be thinking, “Why do I need an article to tell me how to turn right?” After all, the only thing there is to turning right is you gotta turn right. Right? WRONG. There are specific things you have to do and look out for when turning right and, in order for you to be the safe little driver I know you can be, we need to talk about those things.
Before you can make a right turn, make sure you are in the right lane, as close as possible to the right edge of the turn. Simple enough, yes? If you have to switch lanes to get over to the right, make sure you signal to other drivers that you’re about to be a car on the move.
Once you’re in the right lane, be sure and activate your turn signal at least 100 ft before you actually want to make the turn. This gives the cars behind you enough time to slow down so they don’t rear-end you. You know that would suck, so use that sig!
So now you’re finally ready to turn. Great ... but you still can’t. Before you can turn, you need to be sure that there isn’t any traffic around that you may need to give the right-of-way. This especially goes for bicyclists. Most collisions with bicyclists happen at right turns.
If you've completed all three steps, then right on. You can ride on.
