Texas Driver Handbook

The Texas Driver Handbook is authored by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Its goal is to help new drivers qualify for a Texas driver license AND to help Texans become safer drivers. While not an official legal reference to Texas traffic laws, the handbook is intended by the state to provide the federal and state laws that you must understand in order to successfully operate a motor vehicle in Texas.

WHY READ THE TEXAS DRIVER HANDBOOK?

Here are some of the reasons you might want the handbook:

  1. You’re preparing for your knowledge test AKA the written test. (This is also known as the permit test.) Pro Tip: You can take the permit test on our app instead of taking it at the Texas DPS office. In fact, you can just take your drivers ed class on our app. YASS!
  2. You’re studying for your Texas CDL test. If that’s the case, you’ll probably want to check out the Texas CDL handbook (DL-7C) too.
  3. You’re having a heated debate with Ashley on the traffic laws regarding hazardous materials on roadways. You have quite the epic Friday nights, my dear friend.
  4. You want to learn more about how to get your driver license. And just so you know, we’ve got some blog posts that break down how to get your license so it’s easy-peasy to understand.

WHAT’S IN THE HANDBOOK?

The Texas Driver handbook covers a lot of useful information for Texas drivers including:

  • How to get your learner’s permit, driver’s license, commercial driver’s license.
  • Traffic Signs and Lights (stoplights, stop signs, yield signs.)
  • Driving Laws (signaling, passing, parking, one-way streets)
  • Motor Vehicle Information (registration, state requirements)

That’s it! Be sure to check out our course guides if you have specific questions about our state-approved driver education courses.
