Nevada Adult Driver License

Applying for a New Driver's License for Adults (Drivers 18+) in Nevada

If you just moved to Nevada and are already have a driver's license in another state you must transfer your out of state driver's license within 30 days of being granted residency.

The first step to transferring your out of state drivers license is to visit a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Once there you must submit or show the following documents that are approved by the Nevada DMV office.

  1. Submit an Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card (Form DMV 002)
  2. You must show proof of identity, which can include your
    1. Birth certificate
    2. Citizenship certificate
    3. Passport
    4. Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240)
    5. Out of state driver's license, instruction permit or identification card that contains Real ID marking
    6. Permanent Resident Card
    7. You must show proof of your Social Security Number (SSN), which can include your - Social Security Card - W-2 - IRS Form 1099 - Paystub - If you do not have proof of a your Social Security Number follow this link to see which documents you can use to get a SSN card.

    8. You must show two documents proving your residency that are dated within the last 60 days, which can include - Receipt for the rent or lease of a residence - Lease of a residence on which the applicant appears as the lessee - Record from a public utility for a service address - Bank or credit card statement - Employment check stub.

    9. You must show documents that prove your name change, these documents can include - Marriage certificate - Court Order - Divorce decree

In addition to these documents you will need to surrender your current out of state driver’s license to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. All drivers will need to pass a vision test while only driver who are under 21 or who meet the criteria below will need to take a knowledge test.

  • Driver's license or privilege to drive expired or surrendered for more than one year (skills test required if more than 4 years)
  • Three or more convictions of moving violations in the past 4 years
  • driver's license or privilege to drive suspended, revoked, canceled, or otherwise disqualified during the past four years
  • A DUI conviction (drug- and/or alcohol-related offense) within the past 7 years
  • Any license restrictions which must be reevaluated to ensure the driver has the ability to drive safely (skills test may be required also)
  • Applying for a different type or class of license (skills test may be required also)

If your driver’s license is from a US territory or from another country you must take and pass:

  • Vision test
  • Driving test
  • Written test

  • You must pass a vision test

  • You must pass a knowledge test
  • You will have your photo taken
  • You must pay the necessary fees
    • Age below 65: $42.25
    • Age above 65: $23.25

Once you have your Instruction permit you will be allowed to get behind the wheel with a driver who has been driving with a valid driver's license for 1 year and is 21 years or older.

Once you believe you are ready to take the driving skills test, find your nearest DMV office location and schedule a driving appointment. You will need to bring

  • W-2
  • IRS Form 1099
  • Paystub

Instruction permit number For your skills (driving) test the examiner will conduct a safety inspection on the vehicle as well as check the registration and insurance. All vehicles must be insured and registered.

The car you use to take your skills test does not have to be your own but it does need to be in the same license class. The car that you use for the driving test cannot be a rental car.
